The adoption of artificial intelligence among teachers in the United Kingdom has doubled over the past year, yet the technology has failed to deliver a meaningful reduction in total working hours. While AI is increasingly used to streamline specific tasks, the overall burden on educators remains largely unchanged, challenging the narrative that automation will solve the sector's chronic workload crisis.
According to a YouGov survey funded by the Bett education technology event, the surge in AI usage has not translated into more free time for the majority of staff. Specifically, 55% of teachers reported no change in their total working hours despite integrating AI into their workflows, while 4% actually saw their hours increase. The data highlights a disconnect between task-level efficiency and systemic relief: while 51% of users noted a reduction in the time required for specific assignments, only 35% experienced a decrease in their overall weekly hours.
The automation gap
The current application of AI in classrooms is concentrated on preparation and administration rather than the most time-consuming aspects of the profession. The survey found that 76% of teachers use AI to generate lesson plans and worksheets, and 39% utilize it for parent communications and reports. However, marking and grading—historically one of the primary drivers of teacher burnout—remains an area where AI is rarely used, with only 8% of educators employing the technology for this purpose.
A productivity paradox
