Alibaba Cloud is strategically shifting its infrastructure toward domestic AI chips to reduce its dependence on Western hardware. The move aims to increase service margins and secure a more stable supply chain for its artificial intelligence operations.

As part of this pivot, Alibaba's T-Head and DAMO Academy unveiled the XuanTie C950 in March 2026. The XuanTie C950 is a 64-bit RISC-V-based processor built on a 5nm process, specifically designed for edge AI and agentic AI workloads. According to technical specifications, the chip is capable of running large AI models, such as Alibaba's own Qwen series, natively. This capability allows the company to pursue a model of vertical integration, where the hardware is optimized specifically for the software and models it deploys.

The push for tech autonomy

This strategic realignment comes as Alibaba faces significant headwinds in its traditional e-commerce sectors. With retail markets saturating, the company has identified cloud computing and AI as its most reliable growth engines. By investing in its own silicon through T-Head, Alibaba is attempting to bypass the costs and supply chain constraints associated with Western vendors.
