Apple's Find My Network Now Tracks Powered-Off iPhones

Apple has implemented a tracking system that allows compatible iPhones to remain locatable even after they have been manually powered off or the battery has completely drained. This capability transforms the recovery process for lost or stolen hardware by maintaining a signal when the device is technically inactive.
The system relies on the Find My network, a crowdsourced ecosystem of over a billion Apple devices. When a compatible iPhone goes offline, it broadcasts a low-power Bluetooth signal that nearby Apple devices can detect and report back to the owner. Devices that are manually powered off remain locatable for approximately 24 hours. To utilize this feature, users must have both 'Find My iPhone' and 'Find My network' enabled in their device settings.
The Technical Framework
Historically, powering down a mobile device or allowing the battery to hit 0% rendered it invisible to tracking services. Apple solved this by integrating specific hardware into iPhone 11 and later models running iOS 15 or newer. This allows the device to function similarly to an AirTag, emitting encrypted signals that other devices in the vicinity can pick up without the owner of the detecting device knowing.
In addition to the active broadcast, Apple provides a 'Send Last Location' setting. This feature automatically transmits the device's final coordinates to Apple's servers just before the battery dies completely. Once the device is fully offline, this last known location remains visible within the Find My app for up to seven days, providing a static point of reference for the user.

This shift in tracking capability significantly impacts the effectiveness of device theft. Previously, a common tactic for thieves was to immediately power off a stolen iPhone to sever its connection to the internet and GPS. By maintaining a locatable state for up to 24 hours regardless of power status, Apple has closed a critical loophole, making it harder for stolen hardware to disappear instantly.
For the average user, the feature shifts the recovery timeline from a binary 'on or off' state to a multi-day window of opportunity. The ability to track a dead battery or a shut-down phone means that recovery is no longer dependent on the device having an active charge or a cellular connection.

While the current system provides a significant safety net, the window of trackability remains limited to a specific timeframe. Users should monitor whether Apple extends the 24-hour broadcast window in future iOS updates or expands the hardware compatibility to older models.
