AWS Marketplace integrates AI agents to automate software procurement
The cloud giant is shifting toward 'agentic procurement' as demand for autonomous software discovery surges.
AWS Marketplace is integrating AI agents to automate administrative and due diligence tasks within the software acquisition and deployment process. This move signals a transition from traditional app-store models toward autonomous systems capable of streamlining how enterprises discover and deploy tools.
The shift follows a massive spike in user interest. Keyword searches for "AI agents" on the AWS Marketplace climbed from 64th place to 3rd place in just one year. This demand is reflected in the available catalog, where the number of AI agent offerings grew from approximately 1,000 last year to more than 4,000 this year.
The rise of agentic procurement
This evolution is part of a broader industry trend toward "agentic procurement," where autonomous systems independently qualify vendors and execute contracts. This differs from standard SaaS by focusing on "agentic SaaS"—software designed to interact with other AI agents rather than just providing a user interface for humans.
The financial scale of this transition is significant. The global agentic procurement software market was valued at $1.2 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach nearly $9 billion by 2034, representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 24%.
Impact on the enterprise
For buyers, the automation of discovery reduces the friction of software acquisition. By removing the need to wait for sales representatives to schedule demos, buyers can now explore software at their own pace, accelerating the initial stages of the procurement funnel.
However, the speed of autonomous provisioning introduces new risks. While automating discovery and licensing reduces IT overhead, it increases the need for strict corporate governance. Organizations must now implement more rigorous policies regarding security, data access, and the specific authority granted to agents to prevent unmanaged software sprawl.
The human element
Despite the push toward automation, AWS does not expect AI to replace the entire sales cycle. High-value, complex enterprise deals involving custom pricing and intricate configurations still require human sales and procurement teams to navigate the nuances of the agreement.
Industry observers will now be watching how these agents handle more complex negotiations and whether the rapid growth in offerings leads to a consolidation of the agentic SaaS market as enterprises standardize their autonomous procurement stacks. The balance between agentic efficiency and human oversight will likely define the next era of cloud software acquisition.
