Barkbyte Interactive Unveils 1980s Newsroom Thriller 'Static Hour'
Players must balance public safety and transparency as a night shift editor during a mysterious town lockdown.
Barkbyte Interactive has unveiled Static Hour, a narrative thriller that casts players as the sole arbiter of information during a municipal crisis. Set in the 1980s, the game challenges players to manage the flow of news during a mysterious town lockdown, where every editorial decision carries significant weight.
In Static Hour, players assume the role of a lone night shift news editor tasked with filtering conflicting reports to determine what information is broadcast to the public. The gameplay is centered on audio-driven investigation, requiring players to uncover a mystery without ever leaving the newsroom. To do this, they must utilize a suite of period-accurate analog technology, including rotary phones, radio scanners, and rolodexes. According to Barkbyte founder and creative director Claire Sarmiento, the design focuses on the psychological tension of the unknown: "I loved the idea of spooky things happening in a small town just out of sight, where the horrors are driven by audio and left to your imagination."
The Psychology of Uncertainty
The game is positioned as a study in psychological horror, specifically focusing on the stress of uncertainty. By restricting the player to a single room, the experience emphasizes the isolation of the editor and the power they hold over the town's perception of the crisis. This setup mirrors real-world journalistic dilemmas, where the responsibility to inform the public must be balanced against the risk of inciting widespread panic. The narrative forces players to navigate these ethical tensions while managing the constraints of the era's technology and regulatory environment.
Media Responsibility as Gameplay
By gamifying the stress of editorial decision-making, Static Hour explores the intersection of media responsibility and horror. The core tension arises from the player's role as the gatekeeper of truth; deciding which reports are verified and which are discarded directly influences how the town reacts to the unfolding emergency. This focus on fragmented information and the struggle to maintain public trust during a crisis provides a mechanical framework for exploring the consequences of misinformation.
Path to Launch
Static Hour will be available on PC via Steam. While the game emphasizes a slow-burn, atmospheric approach to storytelling, the development team has provided a window for its arrival. According to a press release cited by Rock Paper Shotgun, the title is currently scheduled to launch in Q3 2027. Future updates are expected to clarify more regarding the specific nature of the town's lockdown and the depth of the game's branching narrative paths.
