Bluecore Energy Raises $50M to Deploy Nuclear Power Barges

Bluecore Energy announced a $50 million seed round on September 8, 2026, to accelerate the development of maritime-based nuclear power. The funding, led by Silverton Partners, is inclusive of a $10 million pre-seed round raised in July 2026 led by Slauson & Co.

Based in Long Beach, the startup is developing small modular reactors (SMRs) mounted on floating barges. These mobile units provide clean energy to ports and nearby infrastructure via subsea cables. By utilizing a maritime approach, the company delivers power to high-demand sites, such as AI data centers and heavy industrial hubs, bypassing the extensive land-use hurdles associated with traditional power plants.

A New Approach to Nuclear Infrastructure

Founded by Uber alumnus Kofi Asante, Bluecore Energy is the first nuclear company headquartered at a major port, specifically the Port of Long Beach. The company's strategy centers on reactor mobility, allowing units to be transported directly to where energy is needed most. This model aims to eliminate the years of infrastructure build-out typically required for fixed nuclear facilities.

To execute this vision, Asante has assembled a technical team featuring alumni from SpaceX, Rivian, and Toyota. The company draws a direct parallel to existing military technology to justify the safety and viability of its approach. "The Navy is doing this as we speak, for the last 70 years, and has never had an accident," Asante told TechCrunch. He noted that Bluecore has scaled the technology down to allow for deployment in days rather than years.

Decarbonizing the Industrial Edge

The shift toward portable, maritime-based nuclear energy addresses a critical gap in the clean energy transition: the decarbonization of heavy industrial zones. Ports are energy-intensive hubs that often struggle to integrate traditional renewables due to space constraints. By leveraging floating barges, Bluecore provides a steady, carbon-free baseload of power to these environments.

Furthermore, the rise of AI data centers has created an unprecedented surge in electricity demand. The ability to deploy modular nuclear power near coastal data hubs offers a potential solution for tech companies facing grid limitations and strict sustainability mandates.

The Path Forward

As Bluecore Energy moves from funding to deployment, the industry will be watching how the company navigates the regulatory landscape for commercial maritime nuclear power. While the technical precedent exists within the U.S. Navy, transitioning that technology to the private sector requires rigorous safety certifications and environmental approvals.

Future milestones include the first physical prototype of the floating SMR and the establishment of the first subsea cable connection to a port facility. If successful, Bluecore's model could redefine how heavy industry and high-compute infrastructure access carbon-free energy.
