Casio has introduced the CRW-H001, a hybrid wearable that merges a miniature digital watch with a comprehensive health-tracking smart ring. Launched exclusively in the Chinese market, the device attempts to bridge the gap between traditional timekeeping and the growing trend of invisible biometric wearables.
The CRW-H001 (specifically the CRW-H001M-8) distinguishes itself from competitors like Oura by featuring a built-in LCD panel. This display provides immediate access to the time, a stopwatch, and alarms—utilities typically absent from the screenless designs of most smart rings. Beyond its retro face, the ring is equipped with a suite of biometric sensors capable of monitoring heart rate, blood oxygen levels (SpO2), body temperature, and sleep patterns, while also tracking step counts and estimating calorie burn.
A Shift from Novelty to Utility
Casio has a history of selling non-smart ring watches, including G-Shock variants, primarily as fashion accessories. However, the CRW-H001 evolves this concept by integrating a companion app and a full array of health sensors. This transition moves the product from a novelty item to a functional health tracker, positioning it as a direct alternative to the minimalist, high-end rings produced by Samsung and Oura.
Challenging the Minimalist Convention
The device challenges the industry assumption that smart rings must remain screenless to be viable. By combining a display with a more accessible price point of 1,990 CNY (approximately $295), Casio is targeting users who desire biometric data without sacrificing the immediate utility of a watch. The hardware is constructed from precision steel with mineral glass protection and weighs 19 grams. Power management is split between the display and the smart module; the latter lasts between four to six days on a full charge, with up to 25 days available in standby mode.
Market Outlook
While currently limited to China, the CRW-H001 represents a strategic bet on "retro-cool" aesthetics over the sleek, invisible look of modern wearables.
