The UK's National Museum of Computing (TNMoC) has demonstrated that Claude Code is highly effective for digital archaeology—the process of reverse engineering obsolete hardware and software. This capability allows experts to document legacy code that was previously considered nearly impossible to decipher.

Using the tool, researchers successfully restored software for Inmos Transputer systems, which rely on the obscure and complex occam language. Additionally, Claude Code was used to disassemble and annotate Acorn's 6502-based Network Filing System (NFS), a task that required the AI to integrate specific knowledge of Econet LAN hardware and host software. According to The Register, the workflow involved a tight loop of running and debugging emulators, simulating machine states, and identifying mismatches between code behavior and original chip datasheets and circuit diagrams.

The Challenge of Digital Fossils

Digital archaeology is the recovery of systems that have fallen out of use, a process that is traditionally slow and manual. It requires deep, specialized expertise in defunct hardware and languages that few living engineers remember. In the corporate world, this manifests as the "legacy code" problem: ancient systems that remain critical to business operations but lack documentation and the original developers who wrote them.

A Paradigm Shift for Enterprise IT

The ability of an AI agent to perform high-fidelity reverse engineering suggests a significant shift for enterprise IT departments. For decades, companies have faced a binary choice with legacy systems: maintain them with dwindling expertise or attempt a risky "rip-and-replace" strategy that can disrupt production.

By using tools like Claude Code, organizations can instead create comprehensive "legacy system encyclopedias."
