Comcast has introduced a WiFi motion sensing feature, called "WiFi Motion," for compatible Xfinity routers, turning standard networking hardware into home security sensors. The tool allows the company's routers to detect physical movement within a residence without the need for cameras or additional hardware.
Integrated into the Xfinity Internet app, the feature is part of the Xfinity WiFi Shield service. Reporting from The Verge indicates the update began arriving for customers around August 18. The service is available at no additional cost for eligible customers with compatible hardware.
How WiFi Sensing Works
The technology relies on the analysis of radio frequency (RF) signals. As WiFi waves travel through a home, they bounce off surfaces and human bodies; when a person or object moves, it disrupts these signals. By monitoring these disruptions, the router can identify that movement is occurring in a room without ever capturing a visual image.
