Debian polls developers on AI-generated code policy

The Debian project is conducting a General Resolution poll to establish an official policy on the use of Large Language Models (LLMs) for code contributions. The vote aims to resolve growing tension within the community over whether AI-generated software should be permitted in one of the most influential open-source ecosystems.

The poll presents developers with eight distinct proposals, labeled A through H, ranging from total bans to conditional acceptance. These proposals carry different thresholds for passage; while most require a simple majority, Proposal A requires a 3:1 majority to pass. To ensure a representative outcome, Project Lead Sruthi Chandran recently extended the voting deadline by one week to encourage higher participation.

The scale of the challenge

Debian operates on a massive scale, with version 13 containing approximately 69,830 packages and more than 1.4 billion lines of code. Maintaining the integrity of such a vast repository requires strict quality control, making the introduction of AI-generated content a high-stakes decision. The project is not alone in this struggle, as the broader operating system landscape remains split on the issue.

Some projects have already taken a hardline stance. Both Gentoo and NetBSD have implemented bans on AI-generated code contributions to protect their codebases from potential hallucinations or licensing issues. In contrast, other major players like Red Hat and the Linux kernel project have adopted more permissive or integrated approaches, viewing AI as a tool for efficiency rather than a threat to stability.

Why the resolution matters

The outcome of this vote will define the legal, ethical, and technical standards for Debian moving forward. Beyond the technical concerns of code quality, the debate touches on deeper ideological conflicts. Some contributors argue that the environmental cost of training and running LLMs is a deal-breaker, with one proponent of Proposal H stating that LLM usage "accelerates the destruction of our ecosystem (planet Earth)."

Furthermore, the decision will signal how Debian intends to balance the efficiency gains of generative AI against concerns over copyright and the preservation of human-authored software. As a cornerstone of the Linux world, Debian's choice could influence how other community-driven projects handle the AI transition.

What remains to be seen

Once the extended voting period concludes, the project will determine which of the eight proposals—if any—has met the required majority. The community is now waiting to see if Debian will align with the restrictive policies of NetBSD and Gentoo or follow the more open path paved by Red Hat. Until the final tally is announced, the project remains in a state of flux regarding the role of bots in its development pipeline.
