EcoFlow has unveiled the fourth generation of its River series miniature power stations, introducing the River 260 Gen4 and River 520 Gen4. These updates focus on extreme energy density to reduce overall size and weight while enhancing charging flexibility for mobile users.

The new lineup features two distinct capacities tailored for different needs. The River 260 Gen4 provides a 256Wh capacity with a 300W maximum continuous AC output. For those requiring more headroom, the River 520 Gen4 offers a 512Wh capacity and a 500W continuous AC output delivered through two AC jacks. Both models utilize Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery chemistry, a choice that improves safety and extends the operational lifespan of the cells compared to standard lithium-ion alternatives.

A Shift Toward Universal Charging

A primary innovation in the Gen4 series is the integration of a bidirectional 140W USB-C PD3.1 port. This allows the units to be charged using standard high-wattage USB-C wall chargers, effectively removing the need for the bulky, proprietary charging bricks that have long been a pain point in the portable power industry. This port also functions for output, allowing the stations to fast-charge laptops and other PD-compatible devices.

Beyond charging, the units are designed for emergency reliability. Both models can function as an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS), featuring a cutover time of less than 10ms. This ensures that connected electronics remain powered during a sudden grid failure without rebooting.

Industry Implications

By adopting PD3.1 bidirectional charging and increasing energy density, EcoFlow is aligning the portable power station category with the convenience of consumer electronics. The ability to use a single USB-C cable for both charging the station and powering a laptop mirrors the workflow of modern computing, reducing the amount of gear users must carry for outdoor activities or emergency kits.

Furthermore, the commitment to LFP chemistry addresses long-term sustainability and safety. LFP batteries are generally more stable and can withstand more charge cycles before degrading, making them more suitable for backup power roles where the device may sit idle for long periods before being called into service.

What to Watch

As EcoFlow pushes for smaller footprints and universal standards, the industry may see a broader shift away from proprietary DC inputs in the miniature power station segment. While the core specifications are confirmed, users will likely look for real-world efficiency data regarding how much energy is lost during DC-to-AC conversion when the units are idling, a common challenge the Gen4 series aims to mitigate.
