Framework has updated its entry-level Laptop 12 with Intel Core Series 3 processors, significantly improving power efficiency and connectivity for its most affordable model. The update transforms the compact convertible into a more capable primary machine, specifically targeting the needs of the Linux community.
The updated hardware introduces a range of pre-built configurations featuring Core 3, Core 5, and Core 7 chips, paired with faster DDR5 RAM. Performance gains are most evident in power management; the Core 5 model demonstrated a 70% increase in battery life during 4K Netflix streaming compared to the original Core i5 version. Connectivity has also seen a major upgrade, with two of the four hot-swappable Expansion Card ports now supporting Thunderbolt 4, which enables the use of external GPUs (eGPUs).
A Linux-First Approach
This hardware refresh follows the launch of the high-end Laptop 13 Pro featuring Panther Lake chips. Framework is leaning heavily into its relationship with the open-source community, noting that over 80% of original Laptop 12 owners utilize Linux. The company maintains its commitment to modularity, confirming that the new motherboard, connector cover, and fingerprint scanner are backward compatible with the original Laptop 12 chassis.
Pricing remains competitive for the modular market. The DIY version starts at $549, while the pre-built Linux configuration begins at $699. For those requiring higher memory capacity, the laptop can be configured with up to 48GB of RAM for $659. Pre-built RAM options are tiered by processor: 8GB for Core 3, 16GB for Core 5, and 32GB for Core 7.
What to Watch
While the internal specifications have jumped forward, the 12.2-inch display remains unchanged from the previous iteration. DIY buyers can personalize their machines with a variety of colors, including black, gray, light purple, pink, or green. Shipping for the updated units is scheduled to begin in October.
