Index Ventures Raises $2 Billion to Scale Full-Lifecycle Investment Strategy

The firm boosts total investing capital to $3.5 billion following a massive liquidity event from the sale of Wiz to Alphabet.

Index Ventures has raised $2 billion across three new funds to expand its investment capacity across the startup lifecycle. The move significantly increases the firm's dry powder, positioning it to aggressively pursue high-valuation AI opportunities and late-stage growth assets.

According to TechCrunch, the capital is split into three distinct vehicles: a $400 million seed-focused fund, a $900 million venture fund, and a $700 million addition to a growth fund established earlier in 2024. This fundraising effort brings the firm's total available investing capital to $3.5 billion.

Strategic Liquidity and the Wiz Exit

This expansion follows a major financial windfall for the 30-year-old venture firm. Index was the largest outside shareholder in the cybersecurity firm Wiz, holding a 12% stake. Following Wiz's $32 billion sale to Alphabet, Index's stake is estimated to be worth approximately $3.8 billion.

Beyond the Wiz exit, Index has built a portfolio of high-performance bets, including Figma and strategic AI investments in companies such as Anthropic, Fireworks AI, and Physical Intelligence. While many peer venture capital firms have pursued massive fund size inflation, Index has historically focused on a more disciplined approach to fund scaling.

Implications for the AI Market

By securing $3.5 billion in total capital, Index is signaling its intent to maintain a full-lifecycle strategy—supporting companies from ideation through maturity. This allows the firm to compete for the most competitive AI startups and late-stage opportunities without adopting the "mega-fund" model that has characterized much of the recent VC landscape.

Future Outlook

Industry observers will now watch how Index deploys this capital across its three-tiered fund structure. While the firm has established a strong foothold in the AI sector, the specific allocation of the new $2 billion across seed and growth stages will indicate whether the firm intends to pivot toward earlier-stage bets or double down on scaling existing winners.
