A rare and aggressive strain of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has caused the largest recorded community-acquired outbreak of the superbug in Irish history. The infection struck 48 children and teenagers following their use of inflatable bouncy castles at a community gathering in eastern Ireland.

Of the infected individuals, 47 had played in the bouncy castles, while one child contracted the bacteria through close contact with an exposed peer. While most cases manifested as skin infections, the severity varied. Fifteen children sought treatment at hospital emergency departments or day wards, though only four were formally admitted for inpatient care.

MRSA is a drug-resistant bacterium that often resides harmlessly on human skin. Medical analysis revealed that the specific strain involved was particularly dangerous. The strain was classified as "hypervirulent" because it carried the Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL) toxin. This toxin makes the bacteria significantly more aggressive and prone to causing severe skin and soft-tissue infections compared to standard MRSA strains.

This event is the first instance globally where an MRSA outbreak has been linked to the use of bouncy castles, highlighting a previously unrecognized vector for superbug transmission.
