iRobot Debuts Roomba Duo Concept to Merge Upright Power With Robot Agility

iRobot has unveiled the Roomba Duo, a concept floor-cleaning system designed to eliminate the trade-off between raw cleaning power and agility. Debuted at the IFA 2026 tech show in Berlin, the system marks a strategic pivot toward cooperating robotic units rather than a single multipurpose device.

The Roomba Duo consists of a heavy-duty main unit that functions as both a floor washer and an autonomous mobile dock. This primary unit is equipped with a PowerSpin Max Roller Mop that applies 46 newtons of downward pressure and features integrated steam-mopping capabilities. To handle the debris that typically requires a manual vacuum, the main unit's suction power is comparable to an upright vacuum, capable of removing solid messes such as pasta from carpets. The mobile dock also houses the system's essential infrastructure, including clean and dirty water tanks and a dust bag.

For areas the larger unit cannot reach, the system deploys a smaller, slimmer robot vacuum—identified as the Roomba Plus 575 Combo (or Plus 757 in some contexts). A mechanical arm on the main unit deploys this satellite robot to clean under furniture and in tight corners. To coordinate these movements, the system utilizes PrecisionVision AI and ClearView Pro Dual-Line LiDAR for navigation.

A Shift in Robotic Strategy

This architectural shift comes as iRobot emerges from a period of corporate instability, having been purchased out of bankruptcy by its parent company, Picea. The Duo concept mirrors the logic of commercial cleaning robots used in malls and hotels, where specialized machines work in tandem to cover large areas efficiently. By separating the roles of heavy-duty scrubbing and precision vacuuming, iRobot is attempting to replace several standalone appliances—including stick vacuums, carpet cleaners, and robot mops—with one integrated ecosystem.

Industry Implications

For the home robotics market, the Roomba Duo addresses a fundamental engineering conflict: high-power cleaning requires size and weight, while reaching tight spaces requires a slim profile. By splitting these functions, iRobot aims to provide the deep-cleaning efficacy of a manual upright vacuum without sacrificing the autonomy of a robot. This approach suggests a future where the "all-in-one" robot is replaced by a fleet of specialized tools managed by a single intelligent hub.
