Japan has achieved a critical milestone in aerospace autonomy after successfully launching the Michibiki No. 7 (QZS-7) satellite on August 11, 2026. The deployment transforms the Quasi-Zenith Satellite System (QZSS) from a supplementary service into a sovereign regional navigation network.
The satellite was launched at 4:23 a.m. JST from the Tanegashima Space Center. JAXA utilized the H3 rocket for the mission, specifically flight No. 9 (H3-22S/H3 F9). With the addition of QZS-7, the constellation now consists of seven satellites in orbit. According to NASASpaceFlight, this configuration ensures that at least four satellites are simultaneously visible from Japan at all times, a technical requirement that enables independent positioning without external assistance.
The Shift to Sovereignty
Originally, the QZSS was designed as an augmentation layer for the U.S.-led Global Positioning System (GPS). Its primary purpose was to solve specific geographic challenges, providing more reliable signals in Japan's dense urban canyons and rugged mountainous terrain where GPS signals are often blocked. By increasing the number of satellites in the constellation, Japan has moved beyond mere augmentation to establish a standalone capability.
