Chinese private aerospace firm LandSpace has achieved the first land-based controlled recovery of an orbital-class rocket booster in China's private sector. On August 18, 2026, the company successfully landed the first stage of its Zhuque-3 (ZQ-3) rocket in Minqin County, Gansu Province.

The touchdown occurred during the second-ever mission of the Zhuque-3 vehicle. To achieve the recovery, LandSpace utilized deployable landing legs to stabilize the booster upon impact. This milestone establishes LandSpace as the first private Chinese company to successfully land an orbital-class booster.

A Path to Reusability

This success follows a challenging debut for the Zhuque-3. During its first flight in December 2025, the rocket reached orbit, but the recovery attempt failed. The first-stage booster suffered anomalous combustion during its descent, preventing a soft touchdown and resulting in an explosion on the landing pad.

Founded in 2015, LandSpace has focused its development on methane-fueled engines and stainless steel construction. The company's efforts are part of a broader national push within China to master reusable rocket technology to lower the cost of space access and increase the frequency of launches.

Industry Implications

This achievement signals that China now possesses both state-run and private capabilities for orbital booster recovery, creating a domestic ecosystem that mirrors the launch infrastructure of the United States. By mastering the technical requirements of reusability, China can significantly reduce the financial burden of accessing Low Earth Orbit (LEO).

Lowering these costs enhances China's ability to deploy large-scale satellite constellations and increases its competitiveness in the global commercial launch market. While the Zhuque-3 is a significant leap forward, it remains smaller than some Western counterparts; it has a LEO payload capacity of approximately 18,300 kg, which is lower than the 22,800 kg capacity of SpaceX's Falcon 9.

With the first successful private landing now verified, the industry will be watching to see how quickly LandSpace can transition from a single successful recovery to a reliable, repeatable cadence of flights.
