London Underground 5G signal now rivals citywide surface averages

New analysis shows connected Tube stations are exceeding citywide signal strength, despite missed rollout deadlines.

Connectivity on the London Underground has reached a critical tipping point, with 5G signal strength in connected areas now matching or exceeding the city's general above-ground averages. According to analysis from network intelligence firm Ookla, the gap between the subterranean network and the streets above has effectively closed in the parts of the system currently equipped with modern infrastructure.

The data reveals that 19.8% of below-ground signal scans connected over 5G, surpassing the 16.5% connection rate recorded across the city above ground. Signal quality also showed a marked improvement; the median 5G signal strength below ground was -93 dBm, which is stronger than the citywide above-ground median of -98 dBm. This trend extended to older technology as well, with median 4G signal strength on below-ground platforms hitting -96 dBm, compared to -98 dBm at street level citywide.

The Infrastructure Challenge

Achieving this parity is a significant technical hurdle given the age of the network. The connectivity is managed by Boldyn Networks, formerly known as BAI Communications, which serves as a neutral host for the four major UK mobile brands. To push signals through Victorian-era tunnels, the system utilizes a complex array of distributed antenna systems linked to nine "base station hotels," with coaxial cables strategically installed at train window height to ensure consistent coverage for passengers.

Despite these technical gains, the rollout has been plagued by delays. Mayor Sadiq Khan had previously promised ubiquitous mobile coverage across all Tube stations and tunnels by the end of 2024, a deadline that was missed. Currently, approximately 60% of below-ground stations have coverage, leaving a significant portion of the network still in the dark.

Market Implications

While the numbers appear superior, analysts suggest the results are a reflection of both engineering success and systemic failure. Luke Kehoe, lead industry analyst at Ookla, noted that the Tube has drawn roughly level in connected areas, which is "rather remarkable" given the challenge of retrofitting old tunnels. However, the "superior" underground figures are partly a result of poor citywide surface averages. When compared directly to the streets immediately above the stations, the surface still maintains a slight lead in both 4G strength and 5G availability.

The Road to Completion

The focus now shifts to the remaining 40% of the network. While the initial 2024 goal was missed, the entire network is now expected to be connected by the end of this year (2026). The success of the Boldyn Networks infrastructure proves that 5G can be effectively deployed in deep-level tunnels, but the project remains a race to provide a seamless experience for millions of daily commuters who still encounter dead zones across the city's subterranean arteries.
