Maersk Trials British Rotor Sails to Cut Container Ship Emissions

Maersk is implementing rotor sail technology on a container ship to harness wind power for propulsion. The move represents a strategic attempt to integrate auxiliary wind-assist systems into modern cargo fleets to lower the environmental impact of global trade.

In partnership with British firm Anemoi Marine Technologies, Maersk is installing the system on a Lima-class container ship as a feasibility test. The technology utilizes the Magnus effect, where a spinning cylinder interacting with the wind creates a pressure difference that generates lift, providing forward thrust to supplement the vessel's main engines. While specific savings for this project have not yet been determined, Anemoi Marine Technologies states that its technology generally reduces fuel and emissions by between 5 and 30 percent.

The Push for Decarbonization

The shipping industry is under intense pressure to reduce its carbon footprint as global regulators and customers demand greener supply chains. Because container ships rely on massive amounts of heavy fuel to move goods across oceans, the industry is exploring a variety of alternative propulsion methods. Wind-assist technology is viewed as a practical addition to existing fleets because it does not require a complete engine overhaul and can be retrofitted onto existing hulls to provide immediate, albeit partial, efficiency gains.

If this trial proves scalable, wind-assist technology like rotor sails could significantly lower operational costs and the overall carbon footprint of international shipping. By reducing the reliance on traditional combustion engines during favorable wind conditions, shipping lines can lower their fuel expenditures and emissions.
