Maven Robotics Debuts With $100M to Automate Industrial Palletizing
Bypassing the humanoid trend, the startup uses wheeled, dual-arm robots to target high-uptime logistics automation.
Maven Robotics has emerged from stealth following a $100 million Series A funding round to deploy general-purpose AI robots for industrial automation. The company is targeting the logistics sector, specifically the complex task of mixed palletizing in distribution centers.
The funding round was led by a consortium including RoboStrategy, LocalGlobe, Vine Ventures, and XTX Markets Ventures. Maven's hardware consists of robots equipped with wheeled bases capable of speeds up to 10 mph and two arms that can lift 30kg, utilizing vacuum suckers to pick and move boxes. The company has already seen active deployments where groups of up to eight robots working 16 hours a day reported uptime of 99% or higher. Moving forward, Maven plans to manufacture 250 third-generation robots to scale these operations.
A Shift Toward Industrial ROI
Founded in 2024 by Hamza and Khalid Derbas, the company was established following the disbandment of a special projects group at Apple, where CEO Hamza Derbas served as an automotive engineer. While many contemporary robotics firms focus on academic research or the development of bipedal humanoid forms, Maven is positioning itself around immediate industrial return on investment (ROI).
Rather than solving isolated robotic challenges, the company integrates its systems directly with warehouse management systems to provide end-to-end task automation. "We’re not trying to solve a single robot problem. We’re trying to autonomously take on the task end to end," Derbas told TechCrunch. This strategy prioritizes the practical application of AI over the pursuit of theoretical models.
Challenging the Humanoid Trend
Maven's approach represents a strategic bet against the current industry trend toward humanoid robots in warehouses. The company argues that wheeled platforms are more reliable and cost-effective for achieving ROI in industrial settings. By first targeting the palletization market, Maven is attempting a "task-by-task" evolution toward general-purpose AI robotics.
This methodology leverages data pipelines similar to those used in the autonomous vehicle industry, treating the warehouse floor as a controlled environment for scaling AI. Derbas emphasized this distinction, stating, "We’re not in the race for models — we’re in the race to solve industrial labor and make this work possible at the scale the world needs."
The Path to Scale
As Maven moves out of stealth, the primary metric for success will be the transition from small-scale deployments to the wider rollout of its third-generation fleet. The industry will be watching to see if the company's focus on wheeled stability and specific industrial tasks can outperform the versatility promised by bipedal competitors. While the initial focus remains on distribution centers, the underlying AI framework is designed to eventually expand into other general-purpose industrial roles.
