"We must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models," Amodei stated. "Progress will still seem fast, and we must make wise use of the time we gain." Sam Altman echoed this sentiment, noting that pacing the frontier has been a primary topic of internal discussions at OpenAI in recent weeks.
The Risk of Recursive Improvement
The push for caution is driven by fears of recursive self-improvement, where AI systems begin to improve their own code faster than humans can monitor them. Jacob Coxon, a former researcher at Anthropic, warned that such a trajectory could lead to catastrophic outcomes by the end of the decade. Coxon emphasized that the belief among builders that AI could pose an existential threat is "not a marketing stunt."
