Nasdaq Invests $100 Million in Kraken Parent Payward for Tokenized Equities
The partnership aims to bring Nasdaq-listed shares on-chain while preserving traditional corporate governance and voting rights.
Nasdaq has invested $100 million into Payward, the parent company of cryptocurrency exchange Kraken, in a strategic move to modernize the infrastructure of equity trading. The investment values Payward at $21 billion and establishes a formal partnership to develop the plumbing for tokenized stocks.
Under the terms of the collaboration, the two firms are building a system that allows digital versions of Nasdaq-listed shares to be traded and held on-chain. A critical component of this initiative is the preservation of traditional ownership rights; the system is designed to ensure that tokenized shares maintain the same voting rights as conventional equities. To achieve this, the partnership is utilizing the 'xStocks' framework, which serves as the technical bridge connecting regulated market infrastructure with decentralized blockchain networks.
The Shift Toward On-Chain Finance
This investment arrives as traditional financial institutions increasingly integrate blockchain technology into the core functions of the market. The move follows Nasdaq's previous petitions to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to amend existing rules, which would permit tokenized trading on regulated venues. This transition is not happening in isolation, as other major players, including the New York Stock Exchange, are similarly exploring blockchain-based venues to enable 24-hour trading of tokenized assets.
Modernizing Market Plumbing
The collaboration represents a significant bridge between highly regulated equity markets and decentralized ledger technology. By moving shares onto a blockchain, Nasdaq and Payward are attempting to overhaul the fundamental mechanics of stock ownership. The primary goal is to enable instant settlement and continuous trading, which could significantly increase market liquidity and lower the barriers to entry for a broader range of investors.
The Path Forward
While the technical framework is being established, the timeline for a full public rollout remains unconfirmed. The industry is now watching to see how regulators respond to the integration of the xStocks framework within a regulated environment. The success of this venture will likely depend on whether the SEC and other governing bodies accept the legal equivalence of on-chain tokens to traditional share certificates.
