NEC Corporation and UrbanChain are launching a one-month demonstration in September 2026 in Japan to test a next-generation surface parking service. The system aims to modernize the parking experience by shifting the billing trigger from the moment of entry to the moment a driver physically leaves their vehicle.
The service integrates UrbanChain's 'Parking OS'—a module of the broader UrbanOS—with NEC's proprietary AI image recognition technology. By utilizing a network of cameras, the system detects exactly when a driver exits their car, initiating the parking charge at that precise moment. This approach eliminates costs typically incurred while drivers search for available spots, perform U-turns, or drop off passengers before parking.
The Shift Toward Digital Transformation
Traditional parking infrastructure typically operates on a binary entry-and-exit model, where the clock starts the second a vehicle passes through the facility gate. This often results in users paying for several minutes of unproductive time spent navigating crowded lots. NEC, which has a history of developing safety solutions for mechanical parking, is now targeting the digital transformation (DX) of surface parking to address these specific inefficiencies.
According to NEC Corporation, using the actual time a driver exits their vehicle as the starting point "enhances safety and convenience for parking lot users and enables assessment of new possibilities for data utilization."

Because the AI monitors whether occupants have exited the vehicle, it can detect cars where passengers remain inside for an extended period.
