Patreon Overhauls Discovery Algorithm to Boost Smaller Creators
The platform is shifting toward topic-based recommendations and introducing short-form video to reduce creator reliance on external social media.
Patreon has unveiled a comprehensive roadmap of approximately 30 new or revamped tools designed to transform the platform into a discovery engine. The overhaul aims to help creators find paying audiences directly on the site rather than relying on external traffic.
Central to this update is a fundamental shift in Patreon's discovery algorithm. Previously, the system recommended creators similar to those a user already liked, a mechanism that naturally favored established accounts with large followings. The new approach prioritizes individual posts based on their specific topic, craft, style, and theme. This change is intended to decouple visibility from creator size, allowing smaller artists and writers to surface based on the quality and relevance of their work.
Expanding the Toolkit
To compete with the discovery capabilities of platforms like TikTok and Instagram Reels, Patreon is introducing "Clips" on iOS. This feature allows creators to convert longer videos into short, shareable segments for off-platform promotion or as "Quips" within the Patreon ecosystem. Additionally, the platform is launching "Niches," which are dedicated, topic-based communities designed to connect fans with creators within specific subcultures or interests.
Beyond discovery, the roadmap includes a suite of long-term security and moderation enhancements. These include the development of anti-AI scraping tools, real-time spam detection, and expanded auto-moderation capabilities to protect creator content and community integrity.
The War on Algorithmic Polarization
This strategic pivot represents a move away from the "fleeting engagement" models dominant in modern social media. Patreon CEO Jack Conte has been vocal about the failures of current web platforms, stating that the current version of the web is a "failed promise for creators and fandoms." Conte argues that creators can no longer reliably reach their own followers on traditional platforms, which he suggests prioritize addiction and polarization over genuine connection.
By building internal discovery tools, Patreon seeks to lower the barrier for entry for emerging creators. The goal is to create a sustainable ecosystem where the relationship between creator and fan is not mediated by an external algorithm that favors viral volatility over long-term community building.
What to Watch
As these tools roll out, the industry will be watching to see if a topic-based algorithm can effectively scale without recreating the same "winner-take-all" dynamics found on other platforms. While the shift toward "Niches" and "Clips" provides the infrastructure for growth, the ultimate success of the overhaul depends on whether creators can successfully migrate their primary discovery funnel away from Big Tech's social graphs.
