Qualcomm Backs Ultrahuman in $70 Million Push to Turn Smart Rings Into Computers
The Bengaluru-based startup will integrate Qualcomm silicon to move AI and software processing directly onto the wearable device.
Bengaluru-based wearable startup Ultrahuman has raised $70 million in a funding round led by Qualcomm Ventures and Labcorp. The investment signals a strategic shift to evolve smart rings from passive health trackers into autonomous computing devices.
The funding round, which includes $65 million in primary equity and $5 million in debt, also saw participation from Alpha Wave, Blume Ventures, Nexus Venture Partners, and Alteria Capital. This capital injection pushes Ultrahuman's valuation to $365 million, roughly triple its 2023 valuation of $120 million. According to company data, Ultrahuman has sold approximately 800,000 rings to date and currently maintains an annual revenue run rate of $140 million, with a target of $200 million by January 2027. The U.S. has emerged as the company's primary growth engine, accounting for about 45% of revenue this quarter.
From Tracking to Computing
Founded in 2019 by Mohit Kumar and Vatsal Singhal, Ultrahuman initially entered the health tech space with continuous glucose monitors before pivoting to smart rings. The company recently navigated a period of volatility in the U.S. market following a patent dispute with Oura that impacted sales of its Ring Air. Ultrahuman has since returned to the American market with the redesigned Ring Pro.
To power its next generation of hardware, Ultrahuman is partnering with Qualcomm to integrate the chipmaker's silicon directly into future rings. This partnership aims to move software and AI processing from the cloud and paired smartphones directly onto the ring itself. "All ring devices today are like trackers," said Mohit Kumar, Founder and CEO of Ultrahuman. "Ultrahuman’s goal... is to make the ring more like a computer, where programs and algorithms can run on the device itself."
The Ambient AI Shift
This transition represents a broader industry attempt to decouple wearables from their mobile anchors. By enabling on-device AI and third-party developer applications, Ultrahuman intends to redefine the smart ring as a precise interaction tool and controller that utilizes real-time physiological data to modify user experiences.
For Qualcomm, the investment aligns with a vision of pervasive, invisible technology. Quinn Li, Global Head of Qualcomm Ventures, noted that "the future of AI is personal, ambient, and always on." By moving the compute layer to the finger, the company hopes to create a more seamless interface between human biology and digital intelligence.
Market Outlook
As Ultrahuman scales its hardware capabilities, the industry will be watching whether the consumer market accepts the increased complexity of a "computer ring" over the simplicity of a health tracker. While the company has established a strong foothold in the U.S., the success of this pivot depends on the successful integration of Qualcomm's silicon and the ability to attract a developer ecosystem to build for the new platform.
