Reddit battles 'Generative Engine Optimization' spam as AI models prioritize its data
Marketers are using AI-generated 'sock-puppet' accounts to manipulate the trust signals that power AI search engines.
Reddit is facing a surge of sophisticated, AI-generated spam designed to manipulate the responses of AI search engines like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity. Marketers are increasingly deploying "sock-puppet" accounts to seed authentic-looking product recommendations in niche subreddits, aiming to influence the citations and trust signals these models prioritize.
This new strategy, known as Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) or Answer Engine Optimization (AEO), shifts the focus from traditional search engine result pages to appearing directly within AI-generated answers. The effectiveness of this tactic is driven by Reddit's massive influence on LLMs; in May, Reddit was the most-cited domain by ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google Gemini, and Google AI Mode, surpassing both Wikipedia and major news publishers, according to Semrush data cited by The Verge.
The Rise of Manufactured Consensus
The shift toward GEO is a response to a long-term user trend where people added "reddit" to Google searches to bypass SEO-optimized blogs in favor of human-verified advice. As AI companies began prioritizing this organic trust, the platform's discussions became high-value targets for brands. The goal is no longer to attract a human click, but to create a "fake consensus" of trust that AI models scrape and repeat as fact.
In r/SkincareAddiction, moderators observed a user named Primary-Taro4254 repeatedly promoting Honeydew Labs' hypochlorous acid spray using detailed, scientific-sounding language to mimic a genuine expert. Maya Adivi, a moderator for the community, noted that while the tactics are subtle, the attackers have become more sophisticated. Similar coordinated "brigading" by advertising bots has been reported in other communities, including r/CleaningTips, r/BuyItForLife, and r/loseit.
The Stakes for Digital Trust
This evolution represents a fundamental shift in digital marketing where the target is the AI model rather than the end user. If marketers successfully pollute the trust signals of community-driven platforms, AI search results risk becoming echo chambers of manufactured consensus. This could erode the reliability of AI as a research tool and threaten the integrity of the knowledge bases that users rely on for unbiased peer reviews.
The Defense Strategy
Reddit is attempting to counter this trend with automated defenses. The company claims its AI-driven detection systems currently block 23 million spam views and catch 25,000 spammy posts or comments every day. Jared Nelson, Reddit's senior director of global corporate reputation communications, stated that the company strengthens its playbook every time bad actors change theirs.
As the battle between GEO and AI detection intensifies, the industry is watching whether community moderation and algorithmic filters can keep pace with the speed of generative AI. The outcome will determine whether the "human-verified" nature of the web survives the transition to an AI-summarized internet.
