Ryanair Pairs Google Cloud With AWS to Shield Operations From Outages

Ryanair has entered a five-year strategic partnership with Google Cloud to implement a dual-cloud architecture designed to protect its massive flight network from systemic outages. The move integrates Google's infrastructure alongside the airline's existing Amazon Web Services (AWS) setup to ensure critical failover capabilities.

Announced on August 12, 2026, the agreement focuses on infrastructure resilience and the deployment of advanced artificial intelligence. Ryanair will implement Gemini Enterprise and specialized Google DeepMind models to automate maintenance scheduling, crew logistics, and operational decision-making. As part of the corporate transition, 35,000 employees will move to Google Workspace for productivity. Specifically, the airline plans to utilize DeepMind’s AlphaEvolve for scheduling optimization and WeatherNext for enhanced weather prediction to streamline fleet operations.

Scaling for 300 Million Passengers

This technological pivot comes as Europe's largest carrier pursues an aggressive expansion strategy. Ryanair currently manages approximately 3,900 daily flights and carries roughly 216 million passengers annually. To support its goal of reaching 300 million passengers per year by fiscal 2034, the airline has placed an order for 300 new Boeing 737s. CEO Eddie Wilson stated that the dual-cloud strategy provides the necessary infrastructure resilience and efficiency required to support this growth.

The Shift Toward Cloud Neutrality

The adoption of a dual-cloud model signals a broader industry shift toward "cloud neutrality" for critical aviation infrastructure. By avoiding reliance on a single provider, Ryanair reduces the risk of a total operational collapse during a provider-specific outage, which can ground thousands of passengers. Maureen Costello, Google Cloud VP for UK, Ireland and Sub-Saharan Africa, noted that deploying generative AI at scale and modern collaboration tools allows industry leaders to reduce operational costs and scale securely.

Operational Implications

By embedding agentic AI and specialized models into the core of its flight operations, Ryanair aims to shorten disruption recovery times and lower overall costs. The integration of AI into crew and maintenance logistics is expected to provide a competitive edge in operational agility as the fleet expands.
