SpaceX builds Texas foundry to accelerate AI power infrastructure

Elon Musk has confirmed that SpaceX is constructing a foundry in Bastrop, Texas, to produce critical turbine components in-house. The move is designed to eliminate supply chain delays for natural gas turbines, which are increasingly vital for powering the AI revolution.
SpaceX is developing the facility on approximately 830 acres of land acquired between March and June. According to Musk, the foundry will focus on casting turbine blades and vanes, a specialized process that currently represents a major global bottleneck. Musk claims that bringing this capability in-house can accelerate the deployment of natural gas turbines by up to 18 months, describing the shift as a "profound game-changer."
The AI Power Crisis
The initiative comes as the AI industry hits a critical wall regarding power grid capacity. Hyperscalers—including Amazon, Google, Meta, OpenAI, and Microsoft—are facing severe electricity shortages as data center demand surges. To bypass the delays associated with upgrading public grids, these companies are increasingly turning to private, on-site natural gas plants to maintain their growth trajectories.
The primary technical hurdle is the production of single-crystal turbine blades. This highly complex casting process is mastered by only four companies worldwide, creating a narrow choke point that slows the rollout of new power generation capacity for the tech sector.
Strategic and Environmental Stakes
By mastering this manufacturing process, SpaceX would secure control over a pivotal segment of the AI infrastructure supply chain. This vertical integration provides a significant competitive advantage, allowing the company to scale power resources far faster than competitors reliant on external vendors.
However, the push for rapid gas-powered expansion is drawing intense scrutiny. The acceleration of natural gas turbine use increases environmental and health risks, particularly for marginalized communities located near data centers. Critics argue that prioritizing AI speed over emissions standards leads to severe pollution and public health crises, resulting in reports of premature deaths and a wave of lawsuits against the industry.
