SpaceX to Build Second $100 Billion Starbase Spaceport in Louisiana

SpaceX is expanding its terrestrial footprint with the announcement of a second "Starbase" spaceport in Louisiana. The massive project signals a shift from the experimental development of the Starship rocket to a full-scale industrial operation.

The company plans to invest $100 billion into a site located on a former Exxon property in Vermilion Parish. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027, with the first Starship flight from the new facility targeted for 2029. The scale of the buildout is expected to be immense, with over 30,000 construction jobs projected at the peak of development. Once operational, the site is expected to create 3,000 direct new jobs over a decade, featuring an average annual salary of $92,600.

The Pivot to Starship

This expansion comes as SpaceX pivots its entire business model toward the Starship system. To date, the company has invested over $8 billion in the development of the rocket. This transition is not merely an upgrade but a replacement strategy; Elon Musk has indicated that the current Falcon rocket program will be retired once Starship achieves the high-frequency flight cadence required for the company's next phase. The massive payload capacity of Starship is essential for SpaceX to expand its Starlink constellation and deploy a planned network of satellites dedicated to AI processing.

Industrializing Spaceflight
