The Exploration Company raises $450M to build European SpaceX rival

A record-breaking Series C round will fund the development of reusable cargo capsules and high-thrust rocket engines.

European space logistics startup The Exploration Company (TEC) has raised $450 million in a Series C funding round to accelerate the development of reusable transport systems. The investment marks a critical step in Europe's effort to establish sovereign space capabilities and reduce its reliance on American providers.

The funding round was co-led by Bessemer Venture Partners, Atomico, and the EQT-managed Scaleup Europe Fund, bringing the company's total funding to approximately $680 million. This represents the largest Series C ever raised by a European space company and the largest round secured by an EU-headquartered firm led by a female founder. According to company data, TEC has already secured more than $2 billion in contracts and commitments from a global mix of public and private sector customers.

The push for autonomy

Led by founder and CEO Hélène Huby, a former executive at Airbus and ArianeGroup, TEC is positioning itself as a direct European alternative to SpaceX's Dragon and Falcon systems. The strategic drive for this infrastructure stems from the risks associated with relying on a single U.S. provider, particularly as SpaceX prioritizes its own Starlink payloads over third-party missions. By building its own ecosystem, Europe aims to ensure guaranteed access to space for its own strategic interests.

Engineering a reusable future

The new capital is earmarked for two primary technical milestones: the Nyx reusable cargo capsule and the Storm high-thrust rocket engine. The Storm engine is particularly significant as it aims to introduce full-flow stage combustion to Europe—a high-efficiency design essential for the high launch cadence required by future space-based data centers and broadband communication networks.

"This financing will allow us to execute with urgency: to bring Nyx to the International Space Station and safely back to Earth, while accelerating Storm, the high-thrust propulsion capability Europe needs for its future reusable heavy launcher," Huby stated.

Industry implications

This investment signals a pivot toward private-sector-led reusable infrastructure within the European aerospace industry. By achieving the efficiency of reusable systems, TEC intends to lower the cost of orbital logistics, potentially shifting the market dynamics of the EU space sector. The success of these programs would move Europe away from traditional, government-heavy launch models toward a more agile, commercial approach.

What remains

Observers will now watch for the first flight milestones of the Nyx capsule and the successful test firing of the Storm engine. While the funding provides the necessary runway, the company must still prove that its hardware can match the reliability and cost-efficiency of existing U.S. reusable systems to fully realize its goal of challenging SpaceX's dominance.
