The Trump administration has halted critical research into Cyclospora cayetanensis, a parasite responsible for severe gastrointestinal illness, during a period of unprecedented infection rates. The decision to shelf these studies comes as public health officials struggle to contain a record-breaking outbreak.
According to reports from Ars Technica and other outlets, the USDA is shuttering two of its three primary research projects focused on the parasite. A third project, based in Maryland, was ordered to relocate to Iowa; however, scientists have declined the move, effectively bringing the remaining research to a standstill. This shutdown occurs as the CDC records 17,180 laboratory-confirmed cases and investigates an additional 11,844 cases, totaling approximately 29,024 potential infections during the summer of 2026.

Cyclospora cayetanensis is a coccidian parasite typically transmitted to humans through contaminated food or water. It is most frequently linked to imported fresh produce, making it a persistent threat in a globalized food economy.
