Uber and Zipline Target 1 Million Daily Drone Deliveries by 2029
The ride-hailing giant is investing in the drone startup to pivot Uber Eats toward ultra-fast 'quick commerce'.
Uber has entered into a strategic partnership and investment agreement with drone startup Zipline to integrate autonomous aerial vehicles into the Uber Eats delivery network. The collaboration marks a significant push toward high-speed logistics, with the companies aiming to facilitate one million drone deliveries per day by the end of 2029.
First Zipline-powered deliveries on the Uber Eats platform are expected to launch by the end of 2026. While Uber has not disclosed the specific amount of its investment in Zipline, the partnership comes as the drone company's valuation has climbed to $7.6 billion following an $800 million Series H funding round. Zipline co-founder Keller Cliffton stated that the move is a step toward a world where receiving goods is "as fast and effortless as sending a text."
A Shift to Platform-Centric Logistics
This partnership reflects a fundamental shift in Uber's approach to autonomous technology. After selling its Autonomous Technologies Group and Uber Elevate, the company has abandoned the pursuit of building its own proprietary hardware. Instead, Uber is positioning itself as a platform that aggregates various third-party autonomous mobility and delivery providers.
This is not Uber's first foray into the drone space; the company previously established a partnership and minor investment with Flytrex in late 2025. By leveraging Zipline's existing autonomous infrastructure, Uber can scale its aerial operations without the massive capital expenditure and technical risk associated with developing a private drone fleet.
The Bet on Quick Commerce
For Uber, the move is a calculated bet on "quick commerce"—the delivery of goods within a five-to-10-minute window. Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi noted that this segment is proving to be an even larger market than the original food delivery sector, describing it as an "enormous tailwind" for the next phase of growth for Uber Eats.
By reducing the reliance on road-based couriers for small, urgent orders, Uber aims to disrupt traditional last-mile logistics for both food and retail. This transition could significantly lower delivery times and operational costs while expanding the utility of the Eats app beyond standard restaurant meals.
Future Outlook
As the rollout begins in Zipline's existing markets, the industry will be watching to see how Uber manages the integration of autonomous hardware into its existing software ecosystem. While the 2029 goal is ambitious, the success of the initial 2026 launches will determine if drone delivery can move from a niche novelty to a primary logistics pillar for the company.
