US Battery Startups Pivot to Defense as DOE Injects $500 Million Lifeline
Federal grants are repositioning domestic energy storage as a national security priority after the elimination of consumer EV incentives.
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has awarded $500 million in grants to bolster the domestic battery and critical minerals supply chain. This strategic funding shift provides a critical financial lifeline to startups as the federal government pivots toward treating energy storage as a pillar of national security.
The grants target several key players in the battery ecosystem to reduce reliance on foreign sources for components used in fighter jets, torpedoes, and drones. Among the recipients, Lilac Solutions received $100 million to establish a lithium carbonate processing facility in Utah, with a production target of 5,000 metric tons annually by 2028. Nth Cycle was also awarded $100 million to construct a facility dedicated to refining "black mass" derived from recycled lithium-ion batteries. Additionally, Coreshell received $50 million to expand the manufacturing of metallurgical silicon anode material.
A Shift in Federal Priority
This surge in defense-oriented funding follows a period of significant instability for the American battery industry. The passage of the "One Big Beautiful Bill" (One Big Beautiful Bill Act) significantly reduced or eliminated the clean-energy and electric vehicle (EV) incentives that had previously driven domestic investment. While the automotive sector has historically been the primary engine for battery growth, the removal of these incentives undercut consumer demand and left many startups without a viable path to scale.
Despite a political climate that has expressed disdain for consumer EVs, the current administration views the domestic production of battery materials as a non-negotiable requirement for military readiness. By decoupling battery technology from consumer-facing goals, the government is ensuring that the infrastructure for energy storage remains intact, albeit redirected toward defense applications.
Strategic Implications
This pivot indicates a fundamental repositioning of energy storage from a climate-driven consumer product to a core component of national defense. For startups, the defense sector now offers a critical alternative revenue stream that is less susceptible to the fluctuations of consumer market trends or shifting EV policies.
