Xbox CEO Targets 500 Million Daily Players in 2030 Growth Plan

Asha Sharma pivots toward industry-leading margins and massive user growth following a major restructuring.

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has unveiled a strategic roadmap to transform the division's financial health and user base by fiscal year 2030. In an internal memo dated July 30, 2026, Sharma detailed a plan to achieve "industry leading margins" and a massive expansion of the platform's daily reach.

The strategy sets a primary milestone of 500 million daily active users by 2030, which Sharma describes as the halfway point toward a long-term objective of exceeding one billion daily players. This push for growth follows a period of severe instability for the division, which included the layoff of approximately 3,200 employees and a broader restructuring of its studio operations. Internally, the company is working to improve its "accountability margin," which was reported at 3%.

This pivot comes after a challenging year for Xbox, marked by poor financial results and the largest restructuring in the division's history. Microsoft is attempting to transition Xbox from a traditional hardware-centric business model toward a broader gaming ecosystem. By decoupling its growth from console sales alone, the company aims to scale its services across various platforms and regions. As part of this renewed focus on high-value intellectual property, Sharma pledged that the company will invest in the Minecraft franchise "more than ever before."

This represents a fundamental shift in Microsoft's gaming KPIs, moving the focus from raw market share to operating margins and daily active users. By prioritizing profitability and a software-as-a-service model, Microsoft is signaling that it no longer views the "console war" through the lens of hardware units sold. However, the target of 500 million daily users is viewed by some industry analysts as extremely ambitious given current market constraints and the existing hardware landscape.

Industry observers will be watching for how Microsoft balances these aggressive growth targets with its reduced workforce. While the 2030 goals provide a clear destination, the specific tactical steps to bridge the gap between a 3% accountability margin and industry-leading profitability remain to be seen. Whether the company can successfully scale its ecosystem to reach half a billion daily users will likely depend on its ability to execute this new, service-heavy strategy.
