Alibaba Cloud to Build Third South Korean Data Center to Fuel AI Surge
The infrastructure expansion targets Korean enterprises adopting generative AI through the Qwen model and competitive pricing.
Alibaba Cloud is accelerating its expansion in South Korea with the construction of a third local data center to meet the surging demand for AI-ready infrastructure among domestic businesses.
Announced during the Apsara Conference 2025, the new facility is scheduled to open next year. This project is part of a broader global infrastructure offensive that includes new sites in Brazil, France, and the Netherlands, as well as upcoming facilities in Mexico, Japan, Malaysia, and Dubai. The expansion follows the company's previous openings of Seoul-based data centers in 2022 and 2025.
Strategic Pivot to AI
Alibaba Cloud first entered the Korean market in 2016, initially focusing on the gaming sector. However, the company has shifted its target toward the e-commerce, internet, and retail industries. To attract these clients, Alibaba is leveraging its 'Qwen' AI model and competitive pricing structures. This approach has already secured partnerships with firms such as Univa and Snow, a subsidiary of Naver.
Peipei Li, Global Business Head of Alibaba Cloud Intelligence Group, stated that AI is fundamentally changing business innovation and that the global infrastructure expansion is designed to meet the needs of customers with "innovative thinking."
Challenging Regional Dominance
By increasing local capacity, Alibaba Cloud aims to reduce latency and improve security and compliance for Korean firms transitioning to generative AI. This investment positions South Korea as a strategic hub for AI infrastructure in Asia, directly challenging the market dominance of U.S.-based cloud providers in the region.
Yoon Yong-jun, Country Manager of Alibaba Cloud Korea, described the additional data center as a testament to the company's commitment to the Korean market and a milestone in supporting the AI transformation of domestic companies.
Global Scale and Outlook
As the company continues to scale, official data indicates Alibaba Cloud operates 105 availability zones across 32 regions worldwide. The company's focus remains on scaling these resources to support the high-compute requirements of generative AI.
Industry observers are now monitoring how the company's aggressive pricing and AI integration will affect the market share of established competitors. While some speculate the third facility will be located in the Seoul metropolitan area, the company has not yet officially confirmed the specific site.
