Anthropic Secures $9.1 Billion Power Deal With Riot Platforms

The AI lab will lease 191 megawatts of data center capacity in Texas as part of a 20-year infrastructure play.

Anthropic has signed a massive long-term agreement with Riot Platforms to secure the immense computing power required for its frontier AI models. The deal underscores the escalating war for electrical infrastructure in the race to scale artificial intelligence.

Under the terms of the contract, Anthropic will lease 191 megawatts of data center capacity at Riot Platforms' Rockdale campus in Texas. The agreement is valued at $9.1 billion and spans 20 years, running through June 2048. The contract also includes extension options that could further increase the total value of the partnership.

The Pivot to AI Infrastructure

This partnership marks a significant strategic shift for Riot Platforms, a company traditionally known for Bitcoin mining. By leveraging its existing high-power electrical infrastructure, Riot is transitioning into a specialized AI data center provider. Jason Les, CEO of Riot Platforms, stated that the company has become "one of the most important infrastructure players for the high-workload AI ecosystem."

For Anthropic, the move is part of an aggressive campaign to ensure its Claude AI models have the necessary hardware and power to evolve. The company has already established similar strategic partnerships with major cloud and infrastructure providers, including Amazon, Google, and Akamai, to diversify its computing resources.

The Power Bottleneck

The scale of the Rockdale deal highlights a critical bottleneck facing the AI industry: the shortage of power-ready data center space. While chip supply has been a primary focus for AI labs, the physical ability to plug in tens of thousands of GPUs is now the primary constraint.

This has created an unexpected synergy between AI labs and the cryptocurrency industry. Bitcoin miners, who spent years securing massive power allocations and building high-voltage substations, are now emerging as essential partners for AI firms that cannot wait years for new utility grids to be constructed.

Future Outlook

As AI models grow in complexity, the demand for megawatts will only increase. The industry is now watching to see if other "power-rich" crypto miners will follow Riot's lead and pivot their business models toward AI hosting. While the core terms of the Anthropic deal are set, the long-term execution will depend on the continued expansion of the Rockdale facility and the stability of the Texas power grid over the next two decades.
