Hybrid Cloud Now Standard for 96% of Indian Enterprises
Forrester research reveals a near-universal shift toward hybrid infrastructure as businesses balance scalability with data control.
The vast majority of Indian enterprises have abandoned 'all-in' public cloud ambitions in favor of a hybrid approach. According to a research report from Forrester, 96 per cent of enterprise respondents in India now describe their cloud strategy as hybrid.
This shift indicates a strategic pivot toward balancing the agility of public cloud services with the security and control of private infrastructure. The data suggests that the hybrid model is no longer a transitional phase but the dominant architectural standard for the region's corporate sector. Further highlighting this trend, the study found that 85 per cent of public cloud architects are utilizing cloud-native technologies outside of traditional public cloud environments.
The Drive for Sovereignty and Control
As Indian enterprises accelerate their digital transformation, the adoption of hybrid cloud allows them to maintain strict oversight of sensitive data via private clouds while still leveraging the massive scalability of public providers. This dual-track approach is increasingly critical as regulatory requirements around data sovereignty tighten and the need for low-latency processing grows.
By keeping mission-critical workloads on-premises or in private clouds, companies can mitigate the risks associated with vendor lock-in and ensure that their most sensitive intellectual property remains within their own perimeter. Meanwhile, the public cloud continues to serve as a burst capacity layer for non-sensitive applications and rapid experimentation.
The AI Financial Pressure
While the hybrid model provides flexibility, the surge in Generative AI adoption is introducing new financial pressures. AI-specific compute requirements are significantly more expensive than traditional cloud workloads, leading many organizations to reassess where they place these intensive tasks.
Forrester notes that enterprises are currently reassessing AI workload placement specifically due to concerns over infrastructure costs. Because AI requires specialized hardware and immense power, the cost of running these models in a purely public cloud environment can quickly erode profit margins, making the private component of a hybrid strategy more attractive for long-term sustainability.
Future Outlook
This near-universal adoption suggests that the industry is moving toward a period of 'cloud repatriation' or more aggressive cost-optimization. To sustain AI innovation without compromising their bottom line, Indian firms are likely to move more heavy-compute workloads back to private infrastructure where costs are more predictable.
Industry observers will now be watching to see if this trend accelerates as AI models move from the pilot phase into full-scale production. The primary challenge for the next year will be managing the complexity of these hybrid environments while attempting to keep the soaring costs of AI compute under control.
