Microsoft has launched its 'India South Central' cloud region in Hyderabad, establishing its fourth and largest data center hub within the country. The facility provides the hyperscale infrastructure necessary to accelerate digital transformation and AI adoption across India.

The Hyderabad facility represents Microsoft's largest hyperscale region in India and features three distinct availability zones to ensure resilience and high availability. This new hub joins the company's existing cloud regions located in Pune, Chennai, and Mumbai. The expansion is part of a broader global network that now spans over 80 regions and more than 500 data centers worldwide.

The Surge in Indian Cloud Demand

This expansion arrives during a period of rapid infrastructure growth across the subcontinent. India's total data center capacity has surged from 375 MW in 2020 to approximately 1,575 MW currently. This growth reflects a broader national trend toward digitalization and a significant increase in demand for localized compute power. For Microsoft, the move follows a period of double-digit growth for its Azure platform within the Indian market over the last two years.

Implications for AI and Sovereignty

By establishing a massive local footprint in Hyderabad, Microsoft enables Indian organizations to execute AI workloads and cloud services locally. This proximity is critical for reducing latency and improving data sovereignty, allowing enterprises to keep sensitive data within national borders while accessing high-performance computing.

According to Puneet Chandok, Microsoft India and South Asia President, the goal of making India "AI-first" requires a combination of scale to support growth, the skills to unlock value, and the sovereignty and security that organizations expect. The Hyderabad hub provides the raw compute power required for large-scale enterprise AI adoption, positioning the country to better compete in the global AI economy.
