Papua New Guinea Launches First Sovereign Cloud and AI Data Center

Papua New Guinea has officially entered the era of digital sovereignty with the launch of Kumul Cloud Infinity. The facility marks the nation's first sovereign cloud and AI data center, representing a critical shift toward technological independence.
Led by DATEC PNG and overseen by CEO Preetam Talukdar, the project was officially unveiled with the participation of State Enterprises Minister William Duma. During the launch, Minister Duma designated the facility as a "strategic national asset," emphasizing its role in the country's broader infrastructure. The center is designed to provide a localized platform for cloud computing and artificial intelligence, moving the nation away from a total reliance on foreign-hosted providers.
The Push for Digital Sovereignty
The launch arrives during a period of accelerated digital transformation in Papua New Guinea, coinciding with initiatives such as the Digital Transformation Summit (DTS) 2026. This move toward sovereign cloud infrastructure mirrors a growing global trend where nations prioritize local data storage to ensure stricter security, regulatory compliance, and reduced latency. By hosting data within its own borders, PNG can better manage its digital assets without the vulnerabilities associated with international data transit.
National Security and Economic Impact
Establishing a local AI and cloud hub is a strategic move to reduce dependence on international tech infrastructure, which is essential for national security. Localized compute power allows for the development of indigenous AI applications and the modernization of digital government services.
