Aave Proposes Exit from Six Low-Revenue Blockchains to Optimize Risk
The DeFi giant is shifting away from a broad multichain strategy to prioritize capital efficiency over network coverage.
Aave is proposing to shut down its V3 deployments on six blockchain networks to eliminate underperforming markets. The move signals a strategic pivot toward economic sustainability over simple network expansion.
The governance proposal targets the removal of deployments on Sonic, Scroll, zkSync, Metis, Soneium, and Aptos. According to the proposal, these networks have generated negligible revenue, with Aptos specifically cited as earning less than $1,000 per quarter. In addition to the chain exits, Aave plans to retire 50 low-adoption asset reserves and 21 matured Pendle PTs. The total supply affected by these deprecations is approximately $98.1 million.
A Shift in Multichain Strategy
For several years, Aave pursued an aggressive multichain strategy, deploying its lending protocol across a wide array of Layer 2s and alternative Layer 1s to maximize its reach. However, as the DeFi ecosystem matures, the protocol is moving toward a model that prioritizes meaningful utility and revenue. This specific proposal follows recommendations from LlamaRisk, Aave's risk service provider, which urged the protocol to optimize resources by exiting markets that do not provide sustainable value.
Prioritizing Capital Efficiency
This decision marks a significant departure from the 'deploy everywhere' mentality that characterized much of the previous DeFi era. By removing what TokenLogic, an Aave governance adviser, described as "structurally non-viable" deployments, the protocol is prioritizing risk management and operational efficiency over vanity metrics. The move suggests that mere presence on a hyped blockchain is no longer sufficient to justify the operational overhead and risk associated with maintaining a deployment.
The Path Forward
If approved by governance, the wind-down will streamline Aave's operational footprint and refocus its risk framework on high-performing markets. Observers will now be watching to see if other major DeFi protocols follow suit, potentially triggering a broader consolidation of liquidity away from "zombie" deployments and toward chains with proven economic viability.
