Abu Dhabi Sovereign Funds Hold $764 Million Bitcoin ETF Position Despite $118 Million Dip
Mubadala and ADIC maintained their combined holdings in BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust through the second quarter despite a significant market drawdown.
Two of Abu Dhabi's most powerful sovereign wealth funds have maintained their massive exposure to Bitcoin despite a volatile second quarter that erased millions in paper value. The decision to hold their positions signals a deepening institutional commitment to digital assets among the emirate's state-backed investors.
According to U.S. SEC Form 13F filings, the Mubadala Investment Company and the Abu Dhabi Investment Council (ADIC) held a combined 22.94 million shares of BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) as of June 30. The total value of these holdings stood at approximately $764 million. Specifically, Mubadala held 14,721,917 shares valued at roughly $490.1 million, while ADIC held 8,218,712 shares worth approximately $273.6 million.
This stability in share count comes despite a sharp decline in the position's market value. The combined holdings dropped from approximately $881 million at the end of March to $764 million by June 30, representing a loss of roughly $118 million over the quarter. Despite this drawdown, neither fund reduced its share count, opting instead to ride out the market volatility.
Strategic Infrastructure and Access
These investments are part of a broader strategic push by Abu Dhabi to establish itself as a global hub for regulated digital asset infrastructure. By attracting international exchanges and custodians to the emirate, the city-state is positioning itself at the center of the evolving crypto economy.
For these sovereign funds, utilizing a U.S.-listed ETF like IBIT provides a critical bridge to the asset class. The vehicle allows the funds to gain direct exposure to Bitcoin's price movements without the operational risks and technical complexities associated with managing private keys or maintaining institutional-grade cold storage solutions.
Institutional Conviction
The decision to "hold the line" during a significant price correction suggests that these funds view Bitcoin as a long-term strategic asset rather than a short-term speculative trade. This conviction is particularly evident in the portfolio composition of the Abu Dhabi Investment Council.
Data from the filings show that IBIT represents over one-third of ADIC's reported U.S. securities portfolio, which totals approximately $715 million. This makes the Bitcoin ETF the council's largest disclosed U.S.-listed holding, indicating a high-conviction bet that far exceeds a simple diversification play.
Market Outlook
As sovereign wealth funds increasingly integrate digital assets into their portfolios, the market will be watching for whether these funds move beyond ETFs into direct ownership or expand their holdings into other digital assets. While the current strategy emphasizes regulated U.S. vehicles, the continued growth of Abu Dhabi's local crypto infrastructure may eventually shift how these funds manage their exposure.
