ADI Chain and Shipfinex to Tokenize $2 Trillion Maritime Asset Class
The partnership establishes a regulated blockchain rail for ship finance and commercial vessels with approval from Dubai's VARA.
Blockchain platform ADI Chain and Dubai-based Shipfinex have entered a strategic partnership to establish a dedicated blockchain "rail" for the maritime asset class. The initiative seeks to tokenize the global ship finance market, moving heavy physical infrastructure onto a digital ledger to increase liquidity and accessibility.
According to project details, the partnership targets a total maritime asset class estimated at $2 trillion. Specifically, the duo aims to tokenize the ship finance sector—comprising bank lending, leasing, and export credit—which is valued at approximately $680 billion. To kickstart the ecosystem, Shipfinex is contributing an initial pipeline of roughly 35 vessels with a combined valuation of approximately $500 million.
The Shift Toward Physical RWA
Until recently, the tokenization of Real World Assets (RWA) has primarily focused on liquid financial instruments, such as money market funds and government bonds. This move into maritime assets represents a significant pivot toward tokenizing heavy physical infrastructure. By digitizing cargo vessels and the complex financing structures behind them, the partnership intends to lower the barriers for institutional capital in a market that has traditionally been opaque and highly concentrated.
Technical and Regulatory Framework
To handle the scale of these transactions, ADI Chain will serve as the execution layer. The platform is capable of processing up to 10,000 transactions per second (TPS) and utilizes an Airbender prover to compress data batches into zero-knowledge (ZK) proofs, which are then verified by the Ethereum network.
Crucially, the project has received "In-Principle Approval" from Dubai's Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA) for broker-dealer services. This regulatory nod from a major global shipping hub signals a growing appetite among Middle Eastern governments for regulated RWA frameworks, potentially creating a blueprint for other physical infrastructure assets to follow.
Industry Implications
By migrating a multi-trillion-dollar asset class to blockchain rails, the partnership aims to democratize maritime investment and streamline the $680 billion finance sector. The integration of high-throughput execution and ZK-proof verification allows for the transparency and speed required by institutional investors while maintaining the security of the Ethereum mainnet.
Looking ahead, the success of this rollout will depend on the onboarding of the initial $500 million vessel pipeline and the transition from in-principle approval to full regulatory operation under VARA. If successful, the model could expand beyond shipping to other large-scale industrial assets.
