Adyen Secures RBI Approval to Expand Payment Processing in India
The Dutch fintech leader is launching local payment capabilities and a Bengaluru tech hub to streamline operations for global merchants.
Dutch fintech leader Adyen has officially expanded its operations in India after securing authorization from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The move allows the company to operate as a payment aggregator, a critical step in localizing its financial infrastructure for one of the world's fastest-growing digital economies.
Under the new RBI authorization, Adyen is launching local payment processing capabilities designed to handle both domestic and cross-border transactions. To support this operational scale, the company is establishing a new technology hub in Bengaluru. According to company statements, the hub is intended to leverage Indian technical talent and bring engineering resources closer to the merchants utilizing the platform.
The Strategic Shift
Adyen operates as a global financial technology platform providing end-to-end payment capabilities, risk management, and acquiring services. Its client roster includes some of the world's largest digital enterprises, such as Meta, Uber, eBay, and H&M. Until now, global merchants operating in India often relied on a fragmented web of third-party intermediaries to handle local payments.
By integrating directly into the Indian market, Adyen aims to streamline this process. The expansion is specifically designed to optimize transaction flows for global brands, allowing them to integrate local payment methods—including UPI and Rupay—more efficiently into their existing global stacks.
Market Implications
This expansion comes as India continues its aggressive push toward a cashless economy. For Adyen's merchants, the ability to process payments locally typically results in higher authorization rates and improved conversion levels by reducing the friction associated with cross-border payment routing.
Ingo Uytdehaage, Co-CEO of Adyen, noted that the drive toward a "Cashless India" creates a significant opportunity for businesses to develop new customer journeys in a high-growth environment. Aditya Khullar, Adyen's Country Manager for India, added that the company remains committed to the long-term growth of its merchants as it scales its local presence.
Looking Ahead
As Adyen integrates its Bengaluru hub into its global platform, the industry will be watching how the company competes with established local payment aggregators. The primary focus for the company moving forward will be the steady scaling of its presence to ensure that global merchants can maintain seamless operations as Indian e-commerce volumes continue to climb.
