AI-powered 'Red Team' uncovers thousands of flaws in Bitcoin ecosystem

A volunteer-led security initiative has utilized artificial intelligence to uncover thousands of potential vulnerabilities across the Bitcoin ecosystem, demonstrating the disruptive speed of AI-assisted auditing. The effort, known as the 'Bitcoin Red Team,' was led by Rob Hamilton, CEO of AnchorWatch, to systematically stress-test the open-source code underpinning the network.
Working with 16 volunteers, the Red Team audited more than 390 Bitcoin-related open-source repositories. In a window of approximately 30 hours, the group documented 4,962 findings. This massive dataset included 85 critical and 635 high-severity issues, showcasing an ability to scan and flag anomalies at a scale impossible for human auditors alone.
The Catalyst for Audit
The campaign was spurred by a significant security failure in July 2026 involving a Coldcard Mk3 RNG firmware vulnerability. That flaw led to the theft of substantial amounts of Bitcoin, with estimates ranging from 594 BTC to over 1,800 BTC. This event served as a catalyst for Hamilton and his team to move beyond experimental AI analysis—which Hamilton had begun in May—into a coordinated effort to improve the stability and security of the broader ecosystem.
The Human Bottleneck
Despite the efficiency of the AI tools, the initiative exposed a critical 'human bottleneck' in open-source security. While AI can identify thousands of flaws in hours, the process of triaging, verifying, and patching these issues remains dependent on traditional maintainer review processes. This friction creates a lag between the discovery of a vulnerability and the deployment of a fix, potentially leaving windows of opportunity open for malicious actors.
Proprietary Risks and Next Steps
The project also highlighted the precariousness of relying on proprietary AI for critical security research. Around August 9, OpenAI blocked Hamilton from conducting further Bitcoin security analysis, forcing the Red Team to pivot their operations to alternative systems, specifically Moonshot AI's Kimi K3.
Moving forward, the industry must grapple with how to integrate AI-driven discovery into the slow-moving governance models of decentralized projects. The Red Team's findings suggest that while AI can act as a powerful early-warning system, the ability of maintainers to keep pace with these automated audits will determine the actual security gains for the network.
