Associated Bank has appointed Brianna Elsass as Executive Vice President and Chief Digital Officer. The move signals a strategic push by the Midwest regional lender to modernize its digital infrastructure and enhance its customer-facing technology.

Elsass joins Associated Bank with two decades of experience in the financial sector. She most recently served as Vice President and Head of US Digital Servicing and Technology at BMO. Her appointment is effective immediately, placing her at the helm of the bank's digital ecosystem.

A Track Record of Re-platforming

Elsass arrives at Associated Bank following a tenure at BMO defined by large-scale technical overhauls. During her time there, she led a comprehensive "re-platforming" of the bank's digital experience. This initiative was specifically designed to streamline customer acquisition, improve servicing capabilities, and deepen user engagement through a more cohesive digital interface.

Beyond general modernization, Elsass managed the complex digital integration following BMO's acquisition of Bank of the West in early 2023. To prevent customer attrition during the conversion process, she oversaw approximately 69 separate releases over an 18-month period. This rigorous deployment schedule ensured a seamless transition for the acquired customer base while maintaining service stability.

The Shift Toward Digital-First Banking

This appointment suggests that Associated Bank is prioritizing a "digital-first" strategy to remain competitive against both national peers and fintech challengers. By hiring a leader with a proven history of managing high-stakes integrations and platform migrations, Associated Bank is positioning itself to aggressively upgrade how it acquires and retains customers.

Elsass has previously emphasized the necessity of this evolution. Speaking on the need for modernization in the sector, she noted that "everybody knew we needed a digital-first mindset and a new digital experience."

Future Outlook

As Elsass takes the reins, the industry will be watching to see if Associated Bank pursues a similar re-platforming strategy to the one she executed at BMO. While the bank has not detailed specific upcoming product launches, the focus is expected to remain on reducing friction in the digital onboarding process and improving the overall servicing experience for regional clients. Whether this leads to a full-scale overhaul of the bank's current tech stack remains to be seen.
