Bitcoin-Gold Correlation Hits Six-Year High as Equity Decoupling Deepens

The cryptocurrency is increasingly mirroring gold as investors seek hedges against currency debasement and bond market volatility.

Bitcoin's 90-day correlation with gold has surged to its highest level since 2020, signaling a significant shift in how the asset is being traded. This alignment comes as Bitcoin increasingly diverges from U.S. equity markets, suggesting a pivot in investor sentiment toward macro-hedging.

Data reported by The Block and Use The Bitcoin shows the cryptocurrency's 90-day correlation with the Nasdaq-100 has plummeted to approximately 0.33, marking a one-year low. This decoupling from high-growth tech stocks coincided with intense volatility in the sovereign bond market. Specifically, Bitcoin rose 22.4% over a single week following a rise in long-dated U.S. Treasury yields and an increase in bond purchases by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.

The Shift to Safe Havens

Historically, Bitcoin has largely traded in tandem with the Nasdaq and other risk-on tech assets. However, during intervals of extreme macroeconomic stress or fears of currency debasement, the asset has occasionally mirrored gold, the traditional global safe haven. The current spike in correlation follows a series of bond market selloffs and shifting dynamics within U.S. Treasuries, pushing investors toward assets that can withstand currency instability.

André Dragosch, Director of Research for Bitwise in Europe, noted that when macro forces are strong, investors tend to discriminate less between Bitcoin and gold as they navigate the risks associated with rising currency debasement.

Implications for the 'Digital Gold' Narrative

This trend provides empirical support for the "digital gold" thesis, suggesting institutional investors may now view Bitcoin as a legitimate macro hedge rather than a speculative extension of the tech sector. If Bitcoin continues to decouple from equities while maintaining a tight alignment with gold, it could attract a new class of risk-averse capital that typically avoids volatile digital assets but seeks protection against systemic financial instability.

Market Outlook

While current data shows a clear shift, the long-term sustainability of this decoupling remains a point of contention. Some analysts warn that previous instances of Bitcoin breaking away from stock market trends have historically been short-lived. Market participants are watching to see if this alignment with gold persists through the next cycle of Treasury volatility or if Bitcoin eventually reverts to its role as a high-beta risk asset.
