Bitcoin faces a potential network split as a proposal to restrict non-financial data on the blockchain enters a critical signaling phase. The conflict stems from a discrepancy between software nodes programmed to enforce new rules and a mining community that has shown little interest in adopting them.

The tension centers on BIP-110, known as the Reduced Data Temporary Softfork. The proposal aims to curb "junk" data by restricting transaction forms, specifically limiting OP_RETURN outputs to 83 bytes. The mandatory signaling window for the proposal begins at block 961,632, estimated to occur around August 8-9, 2026. To achieve activation, the proposal requires a miner-signaling threshold of 55%, meaning 1,109 out of 2,016 blocks must signal support.

The Enforcement Gap

The risk of a chain split is driven by the behavior of specific node software, such as certain versions of Bitcoin Knots. These nodes are programmed to reject any blocks that do not signal support for BIP-110 once the network reaches block 961,632. However, observed miner signaling has remained low, creating a scenario where a significant portion of the network's hash power may produce blocks that these enforcing nodes consider invalid.

This technical divide creates a high probability of a network split. In such an event, different sets of nodes would accept different versions of the blockchain, effectively creating two separate versions of the currency. An unnamed developer warned via CoinDesk that Bitcoin holders could risk losing "real BTC" if they attempt to sell coins from a BIP-110 fork.

BIP-110 was designed as a temporary measure to prevent blockchain bloat, but it has sparked a broader debate over Bitcoin's governance. Critics argue that the proposal introduces unnecessary risk to network stability and could hinder the development of advanced smart contract innovations, such as BitVM. The current standoff highlights a fundamental tension between those prioritizing a lean blockchain and those who believe network consensus and flexibility should take precedence over data restrictions.

The primary indicator of a split will be whether miners increase their signaling support to meet the 55% threshold or if the network continues to produce non-signaling blocks that are rejected by Knots nodes.
