Bitcoin Stalls as Treasury Yields Enter 'Danger Zone' Ahead of Jobs Data

Rising bond yields and geopolitical tensions in the Strait of Hormuz create headwinds for risk assets.

TechNewsReel Newsroom · August 7, 2026

Bitcoin remained largely unchanged on Friday, August 7, 2026, as investors paused to await the latest U.S. payrolls report. The cryptocurrency traded in a tight range between $64,300 and $64,350, reflecting a broader market hesitation to commit to a direction before critical employment data is released.

Market pressure intensified as Brent crude oil prices climbed 1.4% to $83.61. According to CoinDesk, the surge followed reports of potential Iranian shipping restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz. This spike in energy costs has revived inflation concerns, which in turn pushed the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield up to 4.73% and strengthened the U.S. dollar.

The Macro Pressure Cooker

Bitcoin has spent much of the summer trapped in a recurring macroeconomic cycle. In this pattern, rising oil prices act as a catalyst for inflation, which forces Treasury yields and the U.S. dollar to remain firm. Because Bitcoin is viewed as a risk asset, these conditions typically cap its growth potential. The current environment has left the market exceptionally sensitive to any data that might signal a shift in Federal Reserve policy.

Jurrien Timmer, Fidelity's Director of Global Macro, highlighted the severity of the current yield environment. Timmer noted that the 10-year yield has moved well into a "danger zone" at 4.73%, stating that "recent history suggests that nothing good happens above 4.5%."

Implications for Risk Assets

This correlation between bond yields and crypto stability underscores the precarious position of digital assets in a high-interest-rate environment. While the broader tech sector continues to see massive capital expenditure—evidenced by SK Hynix investing 54 trillion won (approximately $38 billion) to expand AI memory chip facilities in Yongin and Cheongju—Bitcoin remains tethered to the immediate outlook for U.S. monetary policy.

If the upcoming jobs report shows a softening labor market, it could provide the Federal Reserve with the necessary justification to ease monetary policy. Such a pivot would likely weaken the dollar and push Bitcoin above its current resistance levels.

What to Watch

Conversely, a strong employment print combined with sustained high oil prices would likely empower hawkish policymakers to maintain tight restrictions. This scenario would keep Treasury yields elevated and likely suppress Bitcoin's price further. Investors are now focused on whether the payroll data will act as a release valve for the current market tension or reinforce the existing headwinds.
