BlackRock, Coinbase Lead $15M Push to Quantum-Proof Bitcoin

Nine founding firms pledge three-year funding for post-quantum cryptography research, with each member directing its own grants independently.

Nine financial and crypto firms formed the Bitcoin Security Consortium, pledging $15 million over three years to fund open-source research protecting Bitcoin from quantum computing threats.

Founding members include BlackRock, Coinbase, Strategy, Galaxy, Fidelity Digital Assets, Anchorage Digital, ARK Invest, Block, and Blockstream. The initiative focuses on developing post-quantum cryptography (PQC) to prevent quantum computers from breaking the elliptic curve cryptography securing Bitcoin private keys.

Unlike traditional consortiums, the group will not hold or allocate funds centrally. Each member independently selects developers, researchers, or organizations to fund. The consortium will not take positions on Bitcoin protocol changes or govern Bitcoin development.

Mike Schmidt, executive director of Brink, will coordinate the consortium's work on a volunteer basis.

The announcement comes two days after Galaxy separately launched its own Bitcoin Quantum Readiness Initiative, allocating up to $5 million for developer grants focused on quantum preparedness. That program operates independently of the consortium pledge.

Quantum computing poses a theoretical but serious threat to Bitcoin's security model. A sufficiently powerful quantum computer could derive private keys from public addresses, potentially allowing unauthorized access to funds. While such machines do not yet exist, the timeline for their development remains uncertain, prompting institutional holders to act preemptively.

The participation of systemic financial giants like BlackRock and Fidelity, alongside Coinbase, signals that quantum threats are treated as a material institutional risk rather than a distant academic concern. By funding open-source research, these firms aim to ensure the long-term viability of Bitcoin as a secure asset class for institutional capital.

The consortium's structure reflects the decentralized nature of Bitcoin itself: coordinated action without central control, with each participant retaining autonomy over its contributions while working toward a shared security goal.
