Breez Launches Glow Wallet to Replace Seed Phrases With Passkeys

The open-source Bitcoin wallet integrates the Spark protocol to enable stablecoin transfers directly from BTC balances.

Breez has released Glow, an open-source Bitcoin wallet designed to eliminate the technical barriers of seed phrase management. The launch marks a shift toward mainstream usability by combining self-custody with modern authentication standards.

Available as both a native mobile application and a Progressive Web App (PWA), Glow replaces traditional mnemonic seed phrases with the Passkey standard. This allows users to onboard and recover their wallets using biometric authentication synced via Google or iCloud. According to Breez, the app serves as a reference implementation for the Breez SDK and is released under the MIT license to ensure transparency and community contribution.

Bridging Bitcoin and Stablecoins

Beyond simplified access, Glow integrates the Spark protocol and Flashnet to expand the utility of Bitcoin holdings. The wallet enables users to send stablecoins, specifically USDT and USDC, to more than 30 different networks directly from their Bitcoin balance.

As part of this ecosystem, Glow introduces USDB, a Bitcoin-native stablecoin. This asset is issued by Brale Inc., a registered Money Services Business (MSB) in the United States, and is deployed via the Spark protocol to facilitate stable value transfers within the Bitcoin environment.

The Push for Mainstream Adoption

For years, the requirement to manually secure 12-to-24 word seed phrases has acted as a primary deterrent for non-technical users entering the Bitcoin space. By abstracting this complexity through Passkeys, Breez is attempting to align the security of self-custodial assets with the seamless user experience found in traditional fintech applications like Cash App or PayPal.

The integration of stablecoins further addresses the volatility issue that often prevents Bitcoin from being used for daily commerce. By allowing users to pivot from BTC to USD-denominated assets without leaving their wallet, Glow positions Bitcoin as a hub for a broader range of digital financial activities.

Future Outlook

Industry observers will now watch how the market responds to the "seedless" approach to self-custody. While Passkeys simplify the user journey, the long-term reliance on big-tech cloud providers like Google and Apple for recovery remains a point of discussion within the privacy-centric Bitcoin community. Additionally, the adoption rate of the new USDB stablecoin will indicate whether users are willing to trust new Bitcoin-native assets for their liquidity needs.
